Since liberation, Korea received massive supplies of official aid from the United Nations.
The United States joined aiding Korea more actively as the “Truman-Doctrine” was announced by President Harry. S. Truman which aimed to support countries preventing communist propaganda from spreading.
Although the doctrine itself was focused on... Korea was also considered as there were continues belief that economic development will lead to strong military capacity which will contain communism in Asia.
Aid from the U.S amounted approximate 20% of Koreas’ national budgets. However, aid was focused much on military, basic consumer products to prevent inflation.
With massive aids from foreign countries Korea was able to retain its regime strengthening their economy.
The whole percentage consumer goods took in aid was approximate 40% percentage heavy industry materials used for actually growth were close to 0%. Naturally industries manufacturing these products developed so called the SamBaek Industry(三白産業)(mill, textile, and sugar).
By importing raw materials in a cheap price which took 90% of the whole production cost these industries enjoyed massive profits. Cheil Jedang was one of those companies producing sugar inside of Korea.
After the Korean War sugar consumption was continuously increasing however, Korea didn’t have the technology to produce its own products depending heavily on imports. Cheil Jedang by inventing its own products in 1953 reduced imports to 4% in 1957.
With success Cheil Jedang expanded its industry producing mill, seasonings becoming a basis of one of the biggest conglomerates in the world “Samsung”.
